Why do we struggle to like our own voice so often?
I trace it back to identity. Women receive messaging early on to sound certain ways:
Don’t sound too aggressive
Don’t be too loud
Don’t sound too confident
Don’t speak too high or too low
Our social conditioning can leave us feeling frustrated and cut off from our actual voice. Think of how Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos sounds, and how she distorted her voice to gain respect and funding in the Tech world.
Or how Hillary Clinton often speaks when she gives speeches, often in a very low, gravel pitch, so that she can be taken seriously in politics.
