Do you wonder if you have a monotonous voice? A speaker with a monotone voice will speak on one pitch, with little variation, and can sound dull and detached.
Think of how the teacher sounds in the movie, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, who takes attendance by saying “Bueller… Bueller?” in the most droll manner. That’s monotone!
Try this humming exercise to help a monotone voice.
First, read the following sentence aloud:
" I'm going to the matinee today".
Next, Hum each syllable in the same sentence:
"Hm hm-hm hm hm hm-hm-hm hm-hm"
( " I'm going to the matinee today".)
As you hum the sentence, notice your speech pattern and how your vocal pitch rises and falls. Does your pitch move up and down, or stay on one tone? Try exaggerating your tonal pitches.
