Workshop Replay: Should you have that difficult conversation?

Our live(ly) discussion about how women can say the hard things

Thanks for joining me for last week’s live workshop, “Should you have that difficult conversation?” What a great discussion!

If you missed it, you can watch the replay above. ⬆️ ⬆️ (You might need to click the volume icon to hear me 🔊)

I enjoyed our discussion about whether having a difficult conversation is worth our time and effort. It can feel challenging after years of women being judged harshly for how we communicate, but it is freaking liberating to say what is truly in your heart and mind!

What did you find helpful in the workshop?

I shared my personal experiences and those of my clients, and I suggested three things to consider when having a difficult conversation:

  1. You may anticipate the worst outcome: Our imagination, lived experiences, and outlook can lead us to predict how the talk will go. We may think it will go a lot worse than it does. Our anticipatory anxiety can cause us to worry when we don’t need to. I shared how I can sometimes imagine soap opera-level drama, raised on Dynasty.

  2. Look for an understanding: Try to set a realistic goal of reaching an understanding in your talk. You may not get a resolution right away, but you can aim for an understanding by sharing some thoughtful talking points I lay out in your “Nice Women Can Say Hard Things” Guide for paid subscribers.

  3. Set Some Ground Rules: Schedule a meeting time rather than ambushing the other person. Treat them with respect and avoid shaming or blaming each other. Conduct yourself calmly to set the tone. We also discussed that if the other person breaks these ground rules, you should leave, especially if you fear for your safety.

Let me know what your golden takeaway from our workshop is. I hope this workshop helps you feel more capable and confident about your next difficult conversation. You can say the hard things!

Stay Calm & Speak On,

Jessica
